Making ourselves small before God

Updated: Jan 4, 2020

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C

But the tax collector...would not even look up to heaven

In the Gospel this Sunday, we hear Jesus talking about people praying. One of the people,

would not even look up to heaven

I wonder what you think of that. Why wouldn't he look up to heaven? Is he trying to hide from God? (Have you ever done that? Have you ever thought, if I can't see them, they can't see me?)

His eyes didn't look up. His eyes looked down. Try that, wherever you are. Look down. To look all the way down, right below us, it is easier if our heads bow down, too.

Genuflecting is making yourself small before God.

His eyes are genuflecting. His head is genuflecting. Genuflecting is making yourself small before God. The man knows that God is so big, so great, so good. He shows that he knows this with his body.

We can do that, too. How small can you make yourself?

Does God see us when we are small?

Absolutely.

Jesus says,

all who humble themselves

(make themselves small)

will be exalted

(lifted up).

Right onto the shoulders of the Good Shepherd.
